On October 25-26, 2018 Professor Renata Uitz attended the World Justice Project Scholars Conference on The Rule of Law: National, Supranational and Empirical at Duke Law School.
Professor Uitz presented a paper as part of the panel on international enforcement, entitled "The Rule of Law in the European Union: Mind the Gap." She argues that the EU's rule of law safeguards, whether political or legal, are essentially styled as dialogues with European institutions appearing unwilling to "draw red lines" in the face of the Member States. This is reason for concern, as dialogue of this kind enables the illiberal rulers of Poland and Hungary to use European constitutional frameworks to undermine the founding values of the Union.
