CEU completes its participation in the 2018 Vis Moot

April 17, 2018

In March 2018 and keeping up with a long tradition, CEU participated in the 25th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition held in Vienna. This international event that focuses on international arbitration and commercial law brought together 362 teams representing different institutions from 82 countries and hundreds of law students, academics and arbitration practitioners.

The CEU VIS Moot Team was composed of Bereket Alemayehu Hagos from Ethiopia, Gvantsa Elgendashvili from Georgia, Márton Szegedi from Hungary and Tatiana Balaban from Moldova – the four of them are LL.M. students in the International Business Law Program. The team was coached by two senior SJD candidates, Dorothée Goertz and Albana Karapanço. Six months of intensive work were devoted to the preparation for the Vis Moot participation.

The Ceu Team pleaded against University of Regensburg, University of Strasbourg, Arizona State University and Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo.

Although the CEU team did not advance past the general round of arguments, the team members showed persistence for an excellent performance. Throughout the preparation journey, the team members have substantially developed their research, analytical and writing skills. Additionally, their oral and advocacy skills have improved significantly.

As stated by the CEU team members, participation in this international competition is a unique opportunity of personal growth and represents an added value to their curricula.
