On Thursday 11 July 2024, Markus Böckenförde participated in a seminar on 'Proactive Constitutional Review Processes', which was jointly organised by International IDEA and the Polish Ministry of Justice. In a discussion that included the Polish Minister of Justice, Adam Bodnar, the President of the Board of the Helsinki Foundation, Maciej Nowicki, and Tom Ginsburg (University of Chicago), Mr. Böckenförde examined the potential for learning from recent experiences in designing legal and constitutional frameworks for democracy that are more resilient to backsliding. To this end, he presented the current discussions and challenges in Germany in this regard.
