Papers will explore a variety of themes related to the nature of secular legal orders or more general topics related to patterns of secularization in modern societies.  The idea of the conference is to cast light on the relationship of different types or styles of secularization for implementation of the ideal of freedom of religion or belief as articulated in international instruments and contemporary constitutions.  Papers may address the topic from the perspective of philosophy, political science, or social theory; from the perspective of comparative study of differing legal systems, or from the standpoint of the bearing different versions of the secular have on approaches dealing with concrete political and social issues, such as current cases in contemporary constitutional and human rights settings.
