Thomas Hammarberg is Honorary President of the Mental Disabilily Advocacy Center. He served as the second Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe during a six-year mandate from 2006 to 2012. Prior to his role as Commissioner for Human Rigths, he held various senior human rights appointments including Secretary General of the Stockholm-based Olaf Palme International Center, Ambassador fo the Swedish Government on Humanitarian Affairs and Secretary General of Save the Children Sweden. He was Secretary General of Amnesty International, and received on behalf of Amnesty International the Nobel Peace Prize 1977. Thomas Hammarberg has published widely on various human rights issues, particularly on children's rights, refugee policy, minority issues, xenophobia, Roma rights as well as international affairs and security.
The Mental Disability Advocacy Center (MDAC) is a Budapest-based international human rights organisation which advances the rights of children and adults with intellectual and psycho-social disabilities. MDAC uses law to promote equality and social inclusion through strategic litigation, advocacy, research and monitoring, and capacity-building.
