Assistant Professor Lena Riemer of the Legal Department has published her first book with Brill titled The Prohibition of Collective Expulsion: Protecting Against Arbitrary Expulsion in Human Rights Treaty Law.
The study examines the prohibition of collective expulsion as a cornerstone of migrants’ rights, arguing that without effective procedural guarantees, other legal protections risk becoming meaningless in the border context. Riemer traces how this safeguard is articulated and applied across international and regional human rights systems, including the European and Inter-American Conventions, the African Charter, and the UN Migrant Worker Convention. By drawing together jurisprudence from these diverse regimes, the book provides a holistic account of how the prohibition ensures due process for migrants and asylum seekers and highlights its critical role in preventing arbitrary expulsions.
