Jessica Lawrence (JD, PhD) is an Assistant Professor in the International Business Law program at the CEU Department of Legal Studies. Her research applies insights from critical legal studies, governmentality studies, and contemporary social and political theory to analyze the relationships between transnational economic law and other areas of governmental responsibility, such as human rights, environmental protection, and migration law.
Prior to coming to CEU, Dr. Lawrence held research and teaching positions at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam University College, and the UN-mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica. Her teaching at these institutions has spanned a broad variety of courses, including EU Law, WTO Law, the law of Regional Trade Agreements, International Investment Law, US Corporations Law, Business and Human Rights, Business and Environment, and the International Economic Policy of Migration, among others. She completed her PhD at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, on the subject of Governmentality in EU External Trade and Environment Policy.
In addition to academia, Dr. Lawrence has also worked and consulted for environmental and human rights NGOs, think tanks, and governments in Europe, Latin America, India, New Zealand, and the United States.
