Ioana Stupariu

Ioana is an S.J.D. Candidate at the Legal Department at CEU, in the International Business Law stream. Her SJD research focuses on Data protection & Privacy, Intellectual Property Law, Internet and Technology, having a special interest for the interplay between digital transformation and disruption, and law and regulation. At the moment, she is a Visiting Scholar at Columbia Law School and consults on GDPR compliance matters for Healcloud, a start-up providing data management and analytics systems for the healthcare industry. She is also a regular collaborator of the Riga Graduate School of Law, a GigaNet member and an ICANN Fellow.

Previously, Ioana has worked for two years in a regional Romanian law firm, then she moved to Budapest, where she worked for OPL Attorneys, an international law firm, and Explico, a tech and regulatory consultancy boutique. She has been a Teaching Assistant at Babes-Bolyai University, in Cluj-Napoca, on Public International Law, a tutor in the CEU Open Learning Initiative and a Teaching Assistant at CEU for Big Data, and has also been a Visiting Research Fellow in Beijing, at the China University of Political Science and Law and a Research Fellow at the Swiss Institute for Comparative Law (Lausanne).

Ioana is one of the founders of, an international student-run legal publication focused on Central and Eastern Europe. She was the Managing Editor for 3 years and a coordinator of the Legal Research team, now working on the development strategy and branding of the project as President of the Board. Ioana has also done academic debate for 7 years, having reached the finals of the most important competitions in the world, such as the European Universities Debating Championship (2014) and Oxford Intervarsity (2012).
